Appendix N appreciation
The Appendix N blog carnival is today and I've not got anything to say, I'm just looking forward to reading other people's contributions. Instead, here are some general disjointed thoughts.
It's similar to people writing about their personal canon, which is a thing I love. (I'm trying not to say 'trend' because that sounds derogatory and that's not how I feel about people writing their personal canons.)
In general, I enjoy an appendix. My appendix, which I maintain. Also appendices. Give me all the supplementary material. I've been calling my Marianne North project an appendix, even though it isn't, really. I also have an X-Appendices for a fic I'm writing.
I've been keeping a list of people blogging about TTRPGs and such on Bear and am amazed and delighted to have found sixty-two sixty-five blogs so far. Two Five of them today. I definitely was not expecting so many.
I did look it up in the book (Internet Archive) and Appendix F is gambling. I have like two gambling games I can do for my players when they go to a tavern so clearly this is not my strong point. I'm bad at odds so one time the dwarf won over three thousand gold on a wager for his life. Recently they went to the races and could have won forty thousand gold or something enormously ridiculous betting on woolly mammoths. If they had? I'd've rolled with it. Possibly they would have been heisted, instead of doing the heists.
Most inspiration is probably from history. I'd like to do a campaign set on the Silk Road. A Georgian criminal underworld of rookeries and actors. Archaeologists. Ancient Greek myths (did a one-shot Mythic Odysseys of Theros that was such good fun). Also, I'm very into a Buffy / X-Files / Fringe vibe and would love to run Monster of the Week.
I've mentioned a few times my imposter syndrome around DMing and have been thinking about what to do about it. Two options:
- address the mindset that tells me this is a problem
- (attempt to) fix what I think is the problem
The healthy option would be number one. What I'm probably going to (try) to do is number two.
Also this reminds me I should go through more of the Appendix N game jam entries because I love what I've seen of them so far.
I'll be updating this with Appendix N posts. Please feel free to send me yours! I'd love to read it.
