Bring back cloaks
I suspect my house has an above-average number of cloaks for 21st century Britain. I can't be certain as official figures don't seem to exist. We have nine (that I know of - it's possible there are others I don't know about). Let me know if you have more.
Technically this is a mix of cloaks and capes. At least two are fancy capes - shorter, more decorative, unhooded. Most are cloaks. None of them are mine though I do own a cowl, which I have not included in the numbers as it is clearly a different beast.
My wife often bemoans the lack of cloaks in society (though no lack in our house) and says we should go back to wearing them. I say, go for it. Be the change. No one is stopping you wearing these cloaks outside medieval festivals, Halloween, vampire games, masquerade balls, and so on. Just wear one down to the Co-op.
When you wear a cloak you realise how great they are. Why did they go out of fashion? Some stuff is fiddlier in a cloak, sure. But there are many advantages! The proper fabric ones are so warm. I like the lack of restraint inside. Backpacks don't need their own waterproof bag. They can be thrown open either to adjust the heat or in a dramatic gesture. Sitting in a cloak protects the legs and bottom more comfortably than the long waterproof coats. It's like carrying my own tent, on me.
The place we mostly see cloaks now is the waterproof poncho in its various forms. Light disposable ones for festivals. Sturdier ones for bicycling. Horse riding I suspect. Motorcyclists are too tough to need such protections. Dryrobes are also very in right now. Dressing gowns to the corner shop do not count. So we know how useful they are in certain areas but are still missing out in others.
Genuinely, in the coming winter, I might wear a cloak if I have to go down the road to the shop in the rain. Shopping bag tucks under my arm but now it's under the cloak, dry and safe. I know it's not just my wife who wants to revive the cloak so maybe we can start something.
