What the Fran

Build it even though they might not come

There's no single thing I've seen recently that has provoked this, just a few conversations and ideas floating about. So I'm reasserting my position: You've got to want to do the thing for its own sake. If something is worth doing then it's worth doing, full stop. Badly, properly... doesn't matter.

Write a book even if you're not sure anyone will want to read it. Make art even if no one buys it. Have a blog even if no one reads it. Start a podcast. Make a game. Take photos. Knit.

I'd be writing here anyway. I started with the full acceptance no one might read it. As it happens I know some stuff does get read because people very nicely email or write responses and such.

I'm not saying don't try to get sales, or an audience, or make a living. I'm not talking to professionals or people needing to make money from this.

I'm saying, for the rest of us, if we care enough about the thing we should just do it. Not to worry about the rest. Our work and art is important. To us. They don't rely on other people. Just doing the thing is enough.
