Comfort media
This post brought to you by feeling unwell and also I've been working on my personal canon. So I'm on some comfort media.
I love a big dumb monster movie. Pacific Rim. Jurassic Park. Anything with sharks. Also action movies. The more implausible the better. The Core. Deep Impact. The Mummy. That sort of thing. I'm also partial to The Martian, which I will put in with the big dumb films.
Slightly less dumb, The Two Towers is my favourite of the Lord of the Rings films. I know it's not the best, but it is my favourite. I think Perfect Days could definitely become a comfort watch, and 8 Mountains as long as I turn it off at a certain point. Fingersmith, which might not seem especially comforting, content-wise, but I've watched it so many times now. Comedies obviously: Bottoms, Clueless, DEBS, Kajillionaire, L'Auberge espagnole, Hors de prix. Plus Amélie, which makes Audrey Tautou extremely represented on this list.
On TV I like Documentaries about sommeliers, art heists, and long distance runners. Also Chef's Table. I've got my favourite Xena episodes, favourite X-Files episodes. If my wife and I need something to watch it's Deadloch, all the way. One of the few crimes and murders shows I actually like.
Last month I accidentally reread Atmosphere by Taylor Jenkins Reid and this month I have already deliberately reread it. I reread Wicked by Gregory Maguire at least once a year. It's probably my favourite book and I'll 'look something up' and just read the whole thing. My ultimate guilty pleasure read is Time Traveller's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger.
I love a bit of Jules Verne. It always makes me smile. Around the World. Journey to the Centre of the Earth. I have an adventure reading list on the go. Another of my absolute favourites is Cold Comfort Farm by Stella Gibbons and recently Lolly Willowes by Sylvia Townsend Warner. I could read either of them all day every day. Vanity Fair by William Makepeace Thackeray is long but always a delight.
There are several fanfics I will turn to. In fact I sort of having a revolving door of my favourite fanfics, one on the go at any one time. For a good comfort read I'm looking at reliable fix-it fics and post-canon - which in my main fandom are mostly the same thing. Speaking of, I watch that film every month, will be later this evening in fact, but would absolutely not describe it as a comfort watch.
I can't think about Doris and Mary-Anne are breaking out of prison without watching the whole thing, which is sadly barely ten minutes. So I'm just going to go do that now.
I've certainly forgotten some. Going to link it under personal canon.
