What the Fran

Croissant siege

The first night we were camping we packed up pretty well but it was hot, we were tired, and there was zero chance of rain. So perhaps not as thoroughly as we could have. Almost immediately we were under siege. Shuffling, scuffling, snuffling, scratching. Stuff being knocked about. So I sighed, went back out and put away the picnic mat that had been half dug up, brought the food box containing our breakfast croissants into the inner sleeping part of the tent, and went to sleep.

There was still a lot of activity but my wife just banged on the fabric 'wall' between us and the party in the living area. Getting sniffed is all part of the experience.

The next night we left all the food stuff in the car (a long way away). There was still a good deal of scurrying. I tried to look a bit but couldn't see anything. Day two of the croissant siege was a little calmer.

What visitors were we having? There were a lot of birds supervising our meals, waiting for crumbs. It was in a woods. On the driveway there were signs to beware of hedgehogs. There were lots of small burrow entrances around a fallen log. So many possibilities!

The next night we sat out as it got dark and kept watch. For over two hours.

And saw... 🥁... a rat.

What a great wildlife session!

Lots of new people had arrived so it was busier. Us sitting there at all is obviously a bit of a problem, though nothing had minded having a rave thirty cms from our heads before. We might have missed some stuff, we were going mostly by sound and dim shapes. Still though, we had to laugh. Hedgehogs, owls, surely foxes (a rat didn't move the picnic mat), all manner of shrews and mice, maybe even badgers.

At least we survived the croissant siege with all our croissants intact.
