Doing the degoogling
Finally getting around to doing something about google being a bad thing. I've had gmail addresses almost as long as there has been gmail. Back in 2004 it was seen as a scrappy upstart sort of thing. No one knew. Probably least of all google. That they would take over the world.
It's not that I didn't know, for a long time. It was a sort of weary resignation. Inevitability. A very conscious trade for convenience. I'm going to have to keep a google account to use with Drive, Meet, and Keep - stuff that I use with other people.
Still, I never used Chrome, never used google sign ins, have used a password manager for years. I've mostly used email addresses with domains. All this has accidentally made things a lot easier for me. There's not much running around changing email addresses to do.
Plenty to do though. I've set up on Proton. I'm finding it... really slow? The biggest issue is going to be moving archives. And Drive. And photos. And unravelling the various threads of google accounts and the console (because I've been paying for some of this misery!) I've got so many I can just take them one at a time and I do keep it all tidy and inbox zero.
This means I'll be checking my email in two places for a while yet. And stressing about it a bit, I imagine. There are just so many minor annoyances with all my digital stuff! Hopefully, when this is all done, it will have smoothed out a few of them.
