Failing at a game jam
Prompted by nostalgia for the cassette tape I entered the Cassette Case Game Jam. Making a game that fits in a cassette case. Which is such a perfect size and a lovely idea. And I did. But also, I failed.
What I got of the game itself I really like. I had a fine old time doing a first draft of it on very roughly cut out and scribbled paper. It's a bit of a tribute to analogue stuff - cassettes, slides, microfiche. Inspired by The X-Files and friends, sifting through the archives looking for clues.
I messed around on Canva designing everything, so far as I am capable of, which is not very. I realised I had everything back to front and/or upside down and that I should have set up proper templates in the beginning. Now I know.
Then... Well... a few things happened. I second-guessed myself that it wasn't TTRPG enough. I wanted to change a bunch of stuff. I lost confidence. And I ran out of time. The last few days before the deadline real life intervened and plans changed so that I had no chance of getting it done.
Morals of this story:
- Do not assume there will be time later.
- Make hay while the sun shines.
- Probably it would have been fine.
Overall: great fun, will absolutely do again. Already had other ideas for what I can do with a cassette case. And I've got a game, which I certainly would not have done otherwise. I'm going to continue noodling around with the concept.
To the submissions! A little list of games I am/will be printing off and playing:
