Links: The Internet is Fun and Cool Edition

Lots of fun and cool links from the fun and cool internet. I'd like to think all my link posts are like that but obviously I'm feeling extra optimistic today.

Tell the speakers that you liked their talks at Oh Hello Ana. Tell everyone you liked their thing!

I was chatting to a fun group of people and one of them mentioned how someone else in the group really wanted to ask something to one of the speakers from this year but they were feeling shy and intimidated. I immediately encouraged the situation to happen (and it did)!

Marisabel has been turning her blog into a library and updated with the one month progress.

Love a bit of Jules Verne: Misunderstanding the Genius of Jules Verne — And Why It Matters to Science Fiction by Reactor Mag:

The implication was clear: there is a direct line from Jules Verne envisioning a fictional moonshot that launched from Tampa, Florida in 1865 to NASA launching Apollo 11 from Cape Canaveral, Florida, in 1969. Verne foresaw it, and then it came to be—perhaps even, it came to be because Verne foresaw it.

Cherry's a response to "new book topics to argue about" with another topic:

if i may propose a new book topic to chew the fat about: what was the ugliest decade for book cover design, and for what genre(s)? i think the 00s had some of the worst for lit fic and certain memoirs--bland stock photos and blander typefaces abounded. but fantasy bestseller covers are currently BLEAK. they look like they were "designed" in two minutes and i can barely differentiate them

Several fun projects I've seen recently...

Jacob Filipp made a Victorian StreetView: Experiencing a Victorian London street in 3D.

The Bayeux Historic Tale Construction Kit via Divergent Rays.

Any Human Ever via Raptitude

what would happen if stories were drawn from actual data, randomized to give a valid representation of the human story?

Amazing photo collection of signs at Jules Vernacular via the illustrious Mx Tynehorne’s linkroll.

Weird Web October is on and I'm loving these in particular.

If you're ever feeling down, think about a creature called the "Tailed Tailless Bat" from Curious Quail. I love scientists naming things. Like astronomers naming their telescopes.

Moments of joy by James G with the ever-relatable

Visiting bookshops and convincing myself that I should read the books I have at home before I purchase more.

The Internet Used to Have Places from Dead Parrot BBS:

The Internet used to have places. That sounds a little strange, because the Internet still has addresses, domains, servers, and sites. Technically, the places are still there. But the ordinary experience of being online has changed. A lot of what people now call the Internet happens inside a few large systems where everything is flattened into feeds, profiles, timelines, recommendations, and search results.

It does end on an optimistic note.

Experimental History's There is no epidemic of loneliness, but there is an epidemic of scurvy:

Much of what appears to be a loneliness epidemic is, in fact, a well-intentioned misunderstanding. However, there is a real epidemic out there—one that is far stranger and more sinister.

The oldest natural history museum in the country is about to close to the public by Maddie Stone at The Science of Fiction.

In our household and many others across the region, the news brought shock and grief. So many residents of our city spent cherished childhood days gawking at the T. rex in the dino hall, or marveling at one of the Academy’s dozens of dioramas, which transport visitors to wild places most of us will never step foot in.

Rambling about epic fantasy and masculine romance plots. by Bad Penny is a good ramble.

My Blue Period: An Intro to Cyanotypes at ephemeral ephemera. I've also been doing some cyanotypes over the summer so this was fun.
