What the Fran

Listing my outgoing links

For reasons I've now forgotten I got it into my head a while ago that I should have a list of all the sites I've linked to. Naively I thought this would be as simple as putting my url into some service and letting it index. Oh no. No, no, no.

Nothing worked. Lists were clearly too small, ones that looked like they might big enough were missing stuff, I hit free limits, it was just a mess.

I understand the whole backlink issue has become a spammy SEO thing but I just want stuff that's on my own site? Also I use a broken link checker - presuming that is checking all my links. Maybe it's not, as nothing else seems able to.

Some time after abandoning this mission in frustration I realised probably the easiest way was simply to get my Bear backup as a CSV and just do it myself. If you want something doing, etc.

This turned out to be pretty easy! Long, but easy. I like mundanity, what can I say. I just deleted everything that wasn't a URL and put them all in their own row. Sorted alphabetically, removed my own URLs. Though there are certainly going to be mistakes in there.

Now I had a list I was trying to remember why I wanted a list in the first place. Why that had seemed so pressing I spent hours fighting with all these other sites and then doing this. I don't remember. Maybe I just wondered idly and got sucked into this mess. There were a few useful bits like bad formats that I had the chance to sort out.

So here's some facts. Might as well use them! There are 1442 outgoing links on my site. 105 of them are to Wikipedia. Then Youtube with 36, which surprised me? Wikimedia, 25. Internet Archive, 22. Aeon, 22.

The full list is on the outgoing links index.
