Making a website for my Marianne North autobiography project
Did this project need a website before it started? No. No it did not.
Backstory: I'm always interested in an adventurous woman of the thenadays. Marianne North was a pioneering Victorian botanical artist and solo world traveller. Her autobiography, Recollections of a Happy Life, published in 1894, is a trip. There's also a sequel. But the free copies on the Internet Archive are a bit patchy plus there's a lot of stuff I had to look up.
So I was working on some additional notes - glossary, context, etc - and thought I could share them.
How to share them gave me some trouble. Initially I had thought about sprucing up the books and including the notes but the books aren't that bad and there's various versions around already. Who am I to publish another. How would that even work.
So, a site. Where? Using what? How? I decided to keep it to a simple one pager. It's easy to start and if it proves unruly I can change it.
- took me a couple of hours, made with Carrd.co
- picked the colours from her paintings
- I'm most pleased with how the artwork looks
- I'm least pleased with my rubbish potted biography skills. Why bother when there is Wikipedia
- the actual point of it all, my notes, are not yet there
So the notes are what I will be doing this month. Rereading and adding them to the site, then probably changing the whole thing because it doesn't work somehow. In the meantime, if you are so inclined it's at MarianneNorth.com.
