Mini adventures

Pablo Morales is hosting this month's IndieWeb blog carnival on adventure. Something to get the blood pumping, I love this.

Adventure is a state of mind. Thus I'm a big fan of the mini adventure. And a mini adventure is whatever you make it.

In the early 2000s there were a bunch of adverts for the car, the Mini. So when I say "mini adventure" I say it like in the advert. "It's a Mini adventure."

The mini adventure really came into its own during lockdown, for me. Unhelpfully we were between houses, destined to be suspended that way for a lot longer than anticipated, and most of our stuff was in storage. A trip to the storage unit became a real adventure. Something to anticipate and appreciate.

With that sort of approach anything can be an adventure. My wife and I also call it a 'jolly' which is probably in the dictionary under archaic British Engish. These can be had to the supermarket or DIY shop. My sister and I love a trip to Dunelm and Hobbycraft.

In a slightly more traditional sense it could be a trip to the woods, to a museum or historical site, a walk along the canal. Anything bigger than that is probably a full-fat adventure.

The trick, as I say, is the state of mind. One has to adopt the adventurous mindset. Like hobbits heading off to rob a farmer. There has to be a sense of openness and wonder. Anything could happen, and that is a good thing. Footloose and fancyfree.

Freedom is astonishing. What do you want to do? We could do anything.
