Romanscifi

Every time I go to write a story I describe the genre as scifi with a side of romance and then have to confront the reality that it's an 80k romance with two sentences referring to a time machine.

Historical romance and romantasy have this covered. I'm not entirely sure what the definition of romantasy is and I don't really read it but I respect it. I read Priory of the Orange Tree. Obviously.

So, romanscifi. In my head it's pronounced similar to romantasy - romancify.

It's incidental scifi. It's a romance. There just so happens to be a time machine in the background somewhere. Like romantasy just so happens to have dragons. (Is that the law? Do there have to be dragons?) I'm just going to handwave the science.

It's not even Soft Scifi. It's so soft it's melted. It's a gas.

Spacemance along with the spelling romancifi is also a term I've heard but I don't write spaceships. Yet. So that wouldn't be quite my thing.

Not to be confused with scifi set in Ancient Rome. That's a whole other kettle of fish and one I shall certainly be investigating now I know it's a thing.

And yes I am hyped about The Time Traveler’s Wife sequel Life Out of Order. Why do you ask?
