The Great British Book Off

Thomas Rigby has come up with a very fun Great British Book Off challenge, found via Alexandra Wolfe.

On Your Marks β€” A Book You Can’t Wait To Read I've only just started Audrey Niffenegger's Life Out of Order, the sequel to The Time Traveler's Wife, which I have only been looking forward to since 2003. After that, two Claire North books: As We Fall Through Time, and Notes from the Burning Age.

Signature Bake β€” A Book From Your Favourite Genre That would rely on my knowing what my favourite genre is. I'll go with The Left Hand of Darkness - genre: Ursula K Le Guin. Which is absolutely a genre.

Showstopper β€” A Book With A Beautiful Cover Even though I already had it I went out and got a different edition of Selby Wynn Schwartz's After Sappho for the gorgeous cover alone. And then I tore it getting the sticker off! Fml! Why would you put a sticker on this?

Soggy Bottom β€” A Book That Made You Cry I honestly can't remember ever crying at a book. I can be highly emotionally compromised but I don't think I cry. The last book to give me very big emotions was Atmosphere by Taylor Jenkins Reid. If they make it into a film (🀞🀞🀞) I might crack a tear then.

Hollywood Handshake β€” Your Perfect Book That exists? Gregory Maguire's Wicked. That doesn't exist? Gregory Maguire's Wicked, but less tragic and more kissing.

Leaving This Week β€” A Book You Didn’t Finish I've twice abandoned Arundhati Roy's The God of Small Things but I saw a survey that had it as one of the most unfinished books, so I don't feel too bad. I'll try again-again one day.

Star Baker β€” A Five Star Read My most recent five star new fiction read was probably Slow Gods by Claire North. Non-fiction is The Making of Home by Judith Flanders which I read last month. It was so good I returned it to the library and immediately bought my own copy.

And The Winner Is β€” A Book By A Favourite Author I'm going to pitch some of Emma Donoghue's lesser-known books: Frog Music and Learned by Heart in particular, maybe also The Sealed Letter. Though they are all great, people probably only really know Room and The Wonder, which have also been adapted into films.

Part of my reading notes.
